TokesPlace Presents:

Another Look at Zimbabwe Shona Artist

2 Sep

Zimbabwe’s Shona artists draw inspiration from the natural world, mythology, folklore, rituals, beliefs in ancestral spirits and the female figure depicted in myriad ways. Shona sculptors are said to believe that every stone and everything has a life spirit. It is that “life spirit” that influences what sculpture a stone becomes. Many artists believe that they release that spirit. “The spirits are everywhere in the air, in the rocks. A rock is like a fruit – like an orange or a banana. You don’t eat them without peeling them first. It needs to be opened to be eaten. I open the rocks. The fruit is inside.” – Zimbabwean artist Bernard Matemera
