District of Columbia's City Hall Art Collection

On September 22, 2008, I had the great pleasure of seeing the DC City Hall Art Collection for the first time. The occasion was the Artists' Reception "HEART OF DC" sponsored by the DC Commission on The Arts and Humanities.

The collection included many artists already known to me and whose works I have in my collection. These include Mike Platt, Sam Gilliam, James Lesesne Wells, and Lou Stovall.

Others in the Collection who are known to me and whose work I like are Lillian Burwell,

Harlee Little, Rene Stout, Alma Thomas,

and Percy Martin.

According to the show's brochure the collection includes over 200 pieces distributed over five floors. Obviously one could not interview every piece during a show. No problem. The stately John A. Wilson Building (DC City Hall) is open to the public during regular business hours.

I expect to visit and interview several of the works again and again, especially the non representative abstract pieces. These include Abstractions by Anil Revri:

High, High Heat by Dan Treado:

and a piece the label of which I have misplaced.

There are a lot more reason, perhaps more pleasant reasons, to visit DC's City Hall than to see politicians and bureaucrats.
